Generate harmonious color schemes from a base color.
Choosing colors that work together harmoniously is one of the most challenging aspects of design. Our Color Palette Generator applies color theory principles to take the guesswork out of the process—enter any base color and instantly generate a mathematically balanced palette using classic schemes like complementary, analogous, triadic, or monochromatic. The tool also generates a full range of shades and tints from your base color, giving you everything you need to build a complete design system. Export the entire palette as CSS custom properties in one click.
Method 1: Generate from a Base Color
Method 2: Export as CSS Variables
Starting a New Design System
Every design system needs a core palette—primary, secondary, accent, and neutral colors. Start with your brand's primary color, generate a complementary scheme to find your accent color, then use the monochromatic scheme to generate a full range of shades for backgrounds, borders, and text. Export the entire set as CSS variables and you have a complete, harmonious color foundation for your design system in minutes.
Choosing UI State Colors
Interactive UI elements need multiple color states: default, hover, active, and disabled. The Shades & Tints section generates exactly this—a scale from very light to very dark based on your base color. Use the lightest shades for backgrounds and hover states, the base color for the primary state, and darker shades for active/pressed states and text.
Marketing and Presentation Design
Presentations, social media graphics, and marketing materials need colors that complement each other without clashing. Use the Analogous scheme (adjacent colors on the wheel) for a cohesive, professional look with gentle contrast, or Complementary for high-contrast accent and call-to-action elements. The generated palettes are based on established color theory, so the results are always visually balanced.
Q: What is the difference between complementary and split complementary schemes?
A: A complementary scheme uses two colors directly opposite each other on the color wheel—maximum contrast, high visual energy. A split complementary scheme uses your base color plus the two colors adjacent to its complement, creating a three-color palette that has strong contrast but is more nuanced and easier to work with for complex designs.
Q: How are the shades and tints generated?
A: Shades are created by progressively decreasing the lightness in HSL while keeping hue and saturation constant. Tints are created by progressively increasing the lightness. This produces a perceptually even scale from very dark to very light, all based on your original base color.
Q: Is my color data private?
A: Yes. All palette generation happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. No color values or usage data are sent to any server. The tool works completely offline once the page loads.
Q: Do I need an account to use this?
A: No. The tool is completely free with no registration or account required. Enter a color and get your palette immediately.
