Sort lines of text in various ways.
Sorting a long list manually is one of those tasks that feels simple but takes forever once you have more than a few dozen items. Our Text Sorter handles it instantly—paste your list, choose your sorting method, and get the ordered result in one click. Whether you need to sort names alphabetically for a report, arrange version numbers numerically, organize items by length, or randomize a quiz question list, this tool has you covered. All processing is done locally in your browser for complete privacy.
Method 1: Sort a List
Method 2: Sort and Deduplicate in One Step
Organizing Name and Contact Lists
When preparing attendee lists, author credits, or any alphabetical roster, paste the names one per line and sort alphabetically. Enable case-insensitive sorting to ensure "smith" and "Smith" end up in the right position relative to each other. For large lists, also enable Remove duplicates to catch any repeated entries before the final output.
Sorting Version Numbers and Priority Lists
Version strings like "2.10.0", "2.9.0", and "2.1.0" sort incorrectly with alphabetical comparison because "2.9" comes after "2.10" lexicographically. Use Numeric sort to extract the leading number and sort by actual numeric value. This is also useful for TODO lists, bug trackers, or any ranked list where the first token is a number.
Randomizing Quiz Questions or Survey Items
When creating quizzes, flashcards, or survey randomization, use the Random shuffle option to mix up a list of items. Each click of Sort generates a new random order using an unbiased Fisher-Yates algorithm, so the distribution is truly random rather than pseudo-random.
Q: How does the Numeric sort work?
A: Numeric sort extracts the first number it finds in each line (including negative numbers and decimals) and sorts by that value. If no number is found in a line, it defaults to 0. This means "Item 10" and "Item 9" will sort correctly as 9 then 10, rather than the alphabetical "Item 10" before "Item 9".
Q: Can I sort very large lists?
A: Yes. The tool runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript's built-in sort algorithms, which are highly optimized. Lists with thousands of lines sort in milliseconds. For very large inputs (tens of thousands of lines), there may be a brief delay, but there is no hard limit imposed by the tool.
Q: Is my data safe to paste here?
A: Yes, completely. All sorting happens entirely in your browser. Your text is never uploaded to any server, stored in a database, or transmitted anywhere. This makes the tool safe to use with confidential lists, customer data, or any sensitive information.
Q: Do I need to create an account to use this?
A: No. The tool is completely free with no registration, sign-up, or account required. Paste your list and sort immediately—no limits on usage.
